Aix-en-Provence has a daily market in the Place de Richelme and on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday there is an even bigger farmer's market in the Place des Prêcheurs and the Place de Verdun.
The array of fruit and vegetables is amazing, as is the quality and freshness of the produce. There are also stalls selling local cheese, bread, olives, olive oil and herbs and spices.
I offer a private and personalised guided tour of the daily produce market and specialist local food shops where you can buy cheese and coffee as well as chocolate and calissons (a local sweet). We will meet stallholders and sample some of their wonderful produce along the way. On Tuesday and Thursday we also visit the farmer's market and the market selling baskets, hats, antiques and bric-a-brac. Along the way, I will point out buildings of historic interest, talk about the history of the town and we will visit the famous Cours Mirabeau.
I can help you assemble a picnic for lunch, or plan the dinner you might be cooking that evening based on the seasonal produce available. The tour can be adapted to your interests, just let me know when booking if you have any particular requests.
For 1-2 adults the 2 hour tour costs 100€ per tour. For 3-4 adults the tour costs 50€ per person. (Children under 16 years are free). Tours take place in the morning as the market closes at lunchtime. Tours run from Monday through to Saturday. However, do contact me if Sunday is your only day in town, I might be available.
For large groups please email me for prices. I also offer a Provencal lunch option on the terrace of our home just outside Aix en Provence for groups.
The tour price includes a copy of my favourite seasonal recipes adapted for holiday cooking, a list of great food shops in Aix and some restaurant recommendations for Aix and the Luberon. Tours are conducted in English.
